Some things connect, but it is quite clear that the show is a very modified adaptation.Andrzej Sapkowski created an international phenomenon with his New York Times bestselling epic fantasy saga, The Witcher. Also, I felt all sorts of emotions reading that I didn't feel watching the show, because the actual story line is very different. People might think that it is mainly significant for Geralt and Ciri, but it also made me understand Dandelion differently (one story really expanded on his character growth more than I've found anywhere else). I read both short story collections before starting the novels, and I feel like my understanding of the world and its characters is richer for it. While they are similar, there are all sorts of references and allusions in the books that only refer to the books themselves - for instance some stories in The Last Wish have some sort of significance to stories in Sword of Destiny, and vice versa. I would suggest to read the short stories! I started getting into The Witcher by watching the Netflix adaptation and then I was curious to read the books.
